How to Build a Secret Bookcase Door

Updated February 21, 2017

Having a hidden room can protect valuables and keep possessions from being seen by intruders. You can build a secret bookcase door to hide a room with a bookcase assembly kit from a hardware or housing supply store. You will need to remove an existing door from a room of your home. No major modification must be made which makes the procedure one that can be done by those who rent as well as own the place they live in.

  1. Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver into the top hinge of the door that will be replaced with the bookcase. Pull up on the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to loosen the hinge. Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the hinge. Pull the hinge out of the door frame’s hinge assembly.

  2. Repeat this procedure with the hinge at the bottom of the door. Remove the door from the doorway. Put the door aside.

  3. Put the drop cloth on the floor. Place the various components of the bookcase assembly kit on the drop cloth. Follow the directions to assemble the bookcase using the hammer, nails, wood screws and electric screwdriver.

  4. Stand the assembled bookcase upside down on the drop cloth. Put a drop of bonding glue on each of the four corners on the bottom of the bookcase. Place the centre of a coaster on each of the four corners. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

  5. Stand the assembled bookcase right side up by the doorway. Put the drop cloth away.

  6. Place the back left end of the assembled bookcase by the wall next to the doorway.

  7. Measure two feet down from the top left end of the bookcase. Make a dot with the pencil. Measure up two feet from the bottom left end of the bookcase. Make a dot with the pencil.

  8. Make two dots on the wall across from the dots on the back left edge of the bookcase. Move the bookcase away from the wall.

  9. Screw one side of a piano hinge at each dot on the back of the bookcase with the wood screws and electric screwdriver.

  10. Place the back edge of the bookcase back against the wall so that the dots on the wall line up to the piano hinges. Place the free side of the piano hingers against the dots on the wall. Screw wood screws into the piano hinges touching the wall with the electric screwdriver.

  11. Push the bookcase against the wall and in front of the doorway so that the door way is covered. Place books on the bookcase.

  12. Swing the right side of your secret bookcase door towards you to enter the hidden room. Swing the right side of the bookcase back against the wall to hide the doorway.

  13. Tip

Place picture wax beneath the books in the bookcase to keep them from moving when the bookcase is swung out.

Hide the door that has been removed or someone seeing it will realise you have a hidden room.
