The Digital Video Interface (DVI) specification was designed to transmit high-quality digital video signals. In addition to a digital video signal, the DVI-I and DVI-A standards provide for simultaneous inclusion of red, green, and blue (RGB) analogue channels. While it is not possible to convert a digital signal to analogue without an integrated circuit, the RGB colour channels can still be broken out to VGA and Component video. With four twisted pairs, Ethernet cable provides the ideal foundation for any component video breakout. RCA phono plugs and BNC connectors can be easily attached to each pair.
Untwist and strip the orange, green, and blue pairs from both ends of an Ethernet cable.
Solder RCA plugs to each pair, connecting the pole conductor to each solid-coloured wire. Ground each plug with the pair's striped wire. The orange pair will carry a red colour channel, the green pair will carry green, and the blue pair will carry blue.
Attach the other end to the DVI connector by soldering orange to pin C1, green to pin C2, and blue to pin C3. Pin C5 acts as a common ground, and should be connected to each of the striped wires.
Test with a multimeter, and secure all connectors with electrical tape or cable shrink.
Component RGB may not be compatible with some Component YPbPr devices. It is possible to build converter circuits for RGB to YPbPr, and RGB to Composite Video.
