Cake Decorating Ideas: Little Mermaid

Disney brought the tale of the Little Mermaid onto the big screen in 1989, adapting the adventures of Ariel the mermaid from the Hans Christian Andersen story. Decades later, little girls are still enamoured of Ariel and the movie, and "Under the Sea" is a popular birthday party theme. Make a Little Mermaid cake as part of a girl's dream party; she will love making a wish over an Ariel cake.

A plain sheet cake quickly becomes a Little Mermaid-themed dessert with a cake topper. The toppers depict illustrated scenes featuring the characters of the movie. Toppers can be made of plastic or an edible material such as hard candy. Bake a sheet cake and ice with a coordinating colour of icing, keeping the icing as smooth as possible. Place the topper in the middle of the cake or in one of the corners. Write a happy birthday message with icing above or below the topper.

Shaped Cake Pan

Cake supply companies make cake pans shaped as characters from The Little Mermaid. You can purchase one of these pans at craft stores or online, or search down preowned pans in shapes that aren't being made anymore on online auction sites. Make your cake as you usually would and pour into the shaped pan. When the cake has cooled, remove the cake from the pan. Use the pan's package instructions on how to ice the cake. Following the directions will help you create a perfect Ariel.

Doll Cake

This cake has a bonus -- a doll for the birthday girl. Bake a sheet cake and ice with a coloured buttercream icing. Try to get the icing as smooth as possible. You can use blue icing for an ocean scene, or try a light tan for a beach setting. Try a sprinkle of brown sugar for a sand effect. Create your mermaid habitat by placing gummy ocean animals in the ocean or on the beach. Place a Little Mermaid doll on top of the cake lounging in the water or sitting on the beach.

Free-Form Cake

For a little more effort, you can make your own mermaid-shaped cake. Bake a sheet cake, a dozen cupcakes and two 9-inch round cakes. When they have all cooled, place one of the round cakes on the cake board as the mermaid's head. Cut pieces of the sheet cake to form her body and tail. Take the other round and cut a crescent shape and place it as the fin at the end of her tail. The cupcakes will be her hair falling down beside her shoulder. Ice each part of the cake to create a mermaid. Use candies for scales and liquorice for eyelashes and lips.
