If you opt to use an artificial tree this holiday season, ornamental metal trees are one decorative option. As of 2010, the majority of artificial trees are manufactured from metal and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a non-biodegradable, petroleum-derived plastic. While full-size trees made of pure metal add a 50s retro look to the holidays, they are prone to fire hazards and should be avoided if possible. Alternative metal trees, such as smaller decorative pieces, are a safer choice.
Miniature Decorative Metal Tree
Miniature decorative metal trees are sturdy metal tree sculptures with a branch design. Due to the strong material they are made from, they are ideal for display on a dinner table, shelf or coffee table during the holiday season. Such trees can hold heavy ornaments. Some styles are one or two feet tall in size and about 20 inches wide, though the sizes vary by brand and style.
Vintage-style tinsel trees were the rage in the 1950s when artificial trees first came into fashion. As of 2010, these trees are seen as fire hazards and dangerous to young children due to their toxic metal materials, and so the original metal-made tinsel tree has been replaced by tinsel made of plastic. However, retro metallic trees still exist, and serve as bright and shimmering, silver, alternative Christmas tree choices for families who do not want real fir trees for the holidays.
Fanciful, Full-Sized Metal Tree
One style of artificial holiday tree is a full-sized metallic tree. The trees vary in size, but generally reach 7 or 8 feet tall. The branches, made of metal, are hinged and can be folded down to simplify decorating (so there is no need to reach up high or bend down low) or for storage purposes. According the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, it is not safe to string a metal tree with any kind of electric lights as the tree can become electrically charged from faulty lights. Should this happen, the tree could electrocute an individual who bumps into the tree at the wrong time. However, when not placed by a heating source and decorated with ornaments, these full-sized ornamental trees make attractive decorative holiday pieces.
