While workplace etiquette does not require that employees purchase birthday gifts for their boss, you might feel close enough to your boss so that you want to give him a gift, or you might feel obligated to give a gift. Either way, there are plenty gift options for your boss. Stay away from a gift that might seem too personal, however, as that might not be appropriate for the workplace.

Gift Basket

Create a gift basket for your boss full of items he will be able to use. For example, if he is a coffee drinker, place a new coffee mug in a basket. Along with the mug, add a small container of gourmet coffee and other coffee-related items, such as sugar cubes, flavoured syrups, cinnamon and colourful plastic or glass swizzle sticks. Maybe he has a hobby outside of work, such as golf. Fill a gift basket with golf balls, tees, golf ball markers, a new glove and a golf club head cover.

Office Plant

Choose a new plant for his office. If he doesn't have much space for plants, choose something small, such as a Christmas cactus. For a larger office, choose a larger plant, like a peace lily or a spider plant. Don't choose an indoor plant that requires a lot of upkeep for a boss who does not have much time to spend on taking care of the plant.

Wine

You can't go wrong with a bottle of wine for a boss who enjoys having a drink every now and then. Choose a locally made wine from a nearby vineyard, if you have access to one. Otherwise, go to a local wine shop and ask an expert to recommend a red or white wine, depending on your boss's preference. If you want, give him a bottle of wine along with a wine opener and a new set of wine glasses.

Book

Choose a book for your boss. If he likes fiction thrillers, choose the latest book that is out by a popular author. You could also choose a book that has something to do with your profession. For example, for a man who is in real estate, go with a book written by a famous real estate mogul, such as Donald Trump. If he has a coffee table in his office, choose a book he could display, such as a book full of pictures of his favourite vacation spot.
