Halloween can be one of the most exciting holidays of the year. After all, it is the one time of year that it is socially acceptable to dress however you'd like, whether it is a wicked witch or your favourite celebrity. If you are feeling the urge to dress as a movie star, like Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra or Marilyn Monroe as a bombshell, many costume ideas are available.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is the quintessential legendary Hollywood blond bombshell. One of the most iconic movie star costume ideas is to dress as Marilyn Monroe in the white halter dress as the wind machine blows gusts over her. Not only is the costume instantly recognisable and memorable, it is also extremely easy to accomplish. All that is necessary in order to complete the costume is a white halter dress (this can be purchased both at costume stores and often at regular female clothing boutiques), a platinum-blond Marilyn-esque wig, dressy heels and some classic Monroe make-up (thick, black mascara, bright red lipstick and pink blush).

The world-famous beauty Elizabeth Taylor starred in the 1963 film "Cleopatra" and made the role her own. One sexy and sassy costume idea is to dress as the Ancient Egyptian ruler, inspired by the all-American brunette with the violet eyes, Elizabeth Taylor. This costume can be achieved easily by wearing a long jersey dress (either white or black), a thick, jet-black wig of straight hair and blunt fringe, ample gold accessories and heavy make-up, particularly liquid eyeliner to create dramatic cat eyes. Cleopatra's signature headpiece can be found at costume shops. Other accessories that can add finishing touches include gold cuffs, snake earrings, disc necklaces and gladiator sandals.

James Dean

As for the gentlemen, one effortless yet memorable movie star costume idea is to dress like the late, rebellious poster boy James Dean, who tragically died at age 24. A James Dean look can be accomplished easily by wearing a pair of sturdy and worn blue jeans (such as Levi's), a classic white T-shirt, standard black work boots and a black motorcycle jacket. Hair can be quickly styled with the use of styling gel, worked through the top of the head until a small pouf is formed.

Princess Leia

Princess Leia was portrayed by the actress Carrie Fisher in the legendary 1977 Star Wars flick. Princess Leia's classic white frock can be either be bought at a costume shop or made at home with a regular white gown (make sure that the sleeves are flowing and the neck is high). A normal white bed sheet can also be used in order to produce the costume. The dress can be completed with the use of a thick white belt, preferably with silver jewellery hanging off of it. For Princess Leia's iconic hair, the look can be achieved by putting the hair into two twisted buns on both sides of the head. Synthetic "Leia" wigs are also readily available at many costume shops. Clunky and thick black or white boots can help finish off the look. Accessories, such as black basters, can also really add some flair to the overall costume.
