Cabot Creamery Cooperative

Cabot Creamery Cooperative was founded in 1919, when many farms produced more milk than they could sell. The idea was that local farmers would join together to make butter, a more stable product than milk, and sell it. The original cooperative consisted of 94 farmers, who each contributed a cord of wood to fuel the creamery's boiler and paid dues of £3 per cow. In the 1930s, the co-op hired its first cheese maker and history changed forever. Cabot won first place in the cheddar category at the 1989 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest held in Green Bay, Wisc. Since then, Cabot has won every major cheese tasting award. Cheese can be ordered directly from Cabot by phone or on the co-op's web site.
