Toshiba laptops come with a variety of built-in tools that are designed to make your computing experience easier and more productive. Most of these tools can be found under the "TOSHIBA" folder in your programs list, placed within the "Utilities" subfolder. Options within the tools vary according to your Toshiba laptop model, so consult your user's guide for specifics. The Toshiba support website also offers a variety of online tools that will keep your computer updated and let you know about any known issues.

PC Diagnostic Tool

The Toshiba PC diagnostic tool allows you to test your computer to locate problems with the hardware and its associated drivers. From within the tool, you can select specific items to test or perform an overall system diagnostic. The tests include interactive portions to diagnose speaker, display and other issues. The results list the status of each device in a savable and printable format, and the tool offers a one-click link to the Windows Device Manager, from which you can update drivers and perform further troubleshooting actions.

PC Health Monitor

The Toshiba PC Health monitor, also located in the "Utilities" folder, offers real-time status on your battery, fan and hard-disk drive. From the health monitor screen, you can click any icon for more information on the topic. You can also adjust settings from the individual topic dialogue screens, including items such as enabling hard-drive protection, which pauses your hard-drive head to prevent damage when motion is sensed, and adjusting power settings to improve battery consumption. You can also run diagnostics on your computer's temperature and fan.

Online Tools

Toshiba offers a comprehensive support website for past and current laptop models. Visit the Toshiba website and click the "Support" tab, then click "Product support" on the new page. Enter your laptop model specifics and press "Go" to access the items available for your specific model. Most models will offer detailed specifications and online and printable user's guides, as well as product support notices and downloads to update drivers and other software. If your model does not show a user's guide, check other models in the same series, as the user's guides are often general across model types. The support bulletins are the most useful tool to keep up-to-date on your computer's workings and potential issues.

Flash Cards

Toshiba flash cards, also called hot key cards, add a visual element and additional options to your function keys. You can access the flash cards by holding down the "Fn" key for a few seconds on most Toshiba laptops. The cards will appear across the top or bottom of your screen, offering you clickable access to features such as mute and display brightness adjustments, toggling the touchpad or Wi-Fi adaptor on or off and locking your computer for instant password-protection. The "Stacked" card at the far right of the flash cards will open up more options, such as Bluetooth settings or the Toshiba ConfigFree tool, which monitors your network devices. You can access the flash card settings in the "Utilities" folder.
