Many children are fascinated by heavy equipment and construction sites. They love to play in the sand with miniature trucks and earthmovers, and might even dream of being the operators of big machines when they grow up. If construction sites thrill your child, throw a birthday party that features construction trucks. When it's time to blow out the candles, serve cupcakes topped with construction tools.

Picks and Tiles

Cake decorating and party supply stores offer many styles of non-edible decorations in a construction theme for cupcake toppers. For example, plastic picks--embellishments with toothpick type pointed ends to stick into the cake-- are a quick decoration solution. These come in designs made to resemble tools, road signs, heavy trucks and more. For cupcakes you will transport, decorative plastic tiles lay flat and will not shift around. Tiles come with images of construction workers, machinery and warning signs. Remember to warn guests the plastic picks and tiles are not edible and to remove plastic parts before eating their cupcake.

Toy Toppers

Guests can take home a toy from the party if you use miniature construction toys as cupcake toppers. Toy stores and dime stores have an assortment of tiny rigs, miniature hand tools, tiny toy power tools and construction worker figures to place atop your cupcakes. Since these toys are not made to be used on food, be sure to clean them before use, and lay each toy on a small piece of cling film atop the cupcake to keep the frosting from contamination.

Edible Toppers

Decorate cupcakes with edible art, using your own imagination and ingenuity. Rock candy boulders can accompany miniature dump truck toppers. Frost cupcakes with bright yellow icing to look like hardhats. Trim orange gumdrops to look like traffic cones, pipe road lines on cupcakes and place cones to make a construction zone, adding a "road closed" sign pick. Edible cupcake toppers can make your child's construction-themed birthday treats that much sweeter.
