Cops and robbers and cowboys and Indians are classic themes that can be translated into more specific party ideas. Have some fun with these themes, either for your children's parties or for grown-up celebrations. Choose some real-life examples for your party theme or keep it vague, leaving costume options more open.

Cops vs. Robbers

Divide people into two groups at a cops and robbers party. Cops get a plastic star badge and robbers get a black fabric robber mask. As you play the party games keep a tally of who wins. In group games the cops play the robbers on a two-team scale. In other games, the cops get a point if one of their number wins, and vice versa for the robbers. See who prevails at the end of the party.

Add some excitement to your cops and robbers party by appointing two jailers. Designate a roped-off area (a portion of a deck would work, too) as the jail, and put the jailers in charge. One of the jailers watches the prisoners and keeps them housed while the other roams around and takes bribes. Party members pay a quarter (or more if you like) to jail another guest and jailers only release prisoners when another guest pays another quarter. This party game works well for fundraising events.

Cowboys and Indians

Indicate on your child's party invitations that you'll be having a "Cowboys and Indians" party, but to avoid an uneven number of either, don't expect them to come dressed for the event. Use cowboy hats and feather headbands as your favours and give hats to half and headbands to the rest. Set up events like lassoing a horse, planting crops, bow and arrow practice (with suction-cup arrows of course) and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire.

Wild West Party

Send out cowboy and cowgirl-themed invitations that instruct your child's guests to show up in their best Western wear. Play old cowboy-themed and country and western music to keep the kids in the mood for your activities. Pan for gold--spray paint some rocks gold, mix them in with a plenty of sand and give the kids screens to sift out the gold. Have target shooting using foam darts or balls as bullets and shoot at a line of cans. Roast their food, hot dogs, over the fire.
