Parents and teachers often use the Bible story of Joseph to illustrate faithfulness. Joseph’s father gives him a coat of many colours, which causes his jealous brothers to sell him into slavery. Joseph’s belief in God leads him safely through many trials. Reinforce a lesson about Joseph using colouring pages, crafts and activities.

Wallpaper Coat

Design a coat of many colours for a Joseph paper bag puppet. Cut out arms and legs from construction paper, and glue them onto a small paper lunch sack. Glue wiggly eyes, a bead nose and yarn hair onto the bag for a face. Glue red construction paper lips onto the flap of the bag so that the child can open the mouth with his hand inside the flap. Cut squares of wallpaper samples and glue them onto the body of the bag for Joseph’s coat of many colours.

Fabric Coat

Make Joseph’s rainbow coat from fabric and a paper plate. Cut four pieces off the sides of a large paper plate so that the middle of the plate becomes rectangular. Glue the two longer edge pieces to the bottom of the plate for legs, and glue the two shorter edge pieces to the sides of the plate for arms. Glue a smaller paper plate to the top for a face. Decorate the face with markers, yarn or other art supplies. Cut strips of fabric in many colours and textures. Glue the fabric strips to the middle of the large plate to make Joseph’s coat.

Paper Bag Coat

The Family Education website suggests creating a wearable version of Joseph’s coat of many colours using a paper bag. Cut a hole from the bottom of a large paper grocery sack. This will be the neck of the coat. Cut holes on the narrow sides of the bag for the child’s arms to go through. Children can paint colourful stripes on the bag. After the paint dries, children can wear the coat and act out stories of Joseph.

Coat Cookies

Create a colourful, edible snack. Before the activity, bake gingerbread or sugar cookies shaped like people. Allow children to decorate the cookies, using sprinkles or small candies for the face. Spread stripes of coloured icing onto the body of the cookie so that it resembles Joseph in his coat of many colours.
