Culinary summer camps for teens

Teens interested in culinary art have ample opportunities to learn basic and advanced cooking techniques after the school year is cojmplete. During the summer months, parents can send their kids to culinary summer camps where they learn skills to prepare them for a culinary career or give them skills they can use in adulthood. Aspiring chefs can learn about food history, baking, cooking and food chemistry in camps located all across the nation.

Kendall College Camps

Day and overnight culinary camps are available at Kendall College in Chicago for teens 13 to 18 years old. Camps begin the second week in June and end the second week of August.

Campers are taught by renowned chefs in topics such as basic cooking, baking and pastry, and international cuisine. Kendall College offers a new program for campers called Backpack to Briefcase, where they learn business concepts such as leadership, business etiquette and teamwork.

Each camp session ends with campers preparing a banquet for their families and friends. Overnight camp rates are £796 per week and day camp rates are £520 per week. The camp costs include the uniform and supplies fee, meals and banquet tickets. Kendall College offers campers an incentive for attending their summer camp: a £650 scholarship towards tuition at Kendall College.

Exploration Summer Programs

Students in eighth through tenth grade will have the opportunity to cook with Small Plates Restaurant owner and chef Jerome Picca at Explorations culinary camp inNorwood, Massachuseetts. The summer session is from July 18 to 31.

In a fully stocked kitchen, campers will learn vegetable and fruit cutting techniques using equipment including peelers, paring knives and zesters. They will taste and prepare food from ancient Rome and the Middle Ages and make their own sauces using herbs and spices. Chef Picca will teach the campers culinary tricks while teaching the basics, such as sautéing, simmering and searing. Later in the afternoons after learning and cooking in the kitchen, campers can participate in optional activities like arts and athletics.

One session costs £3,051, which includes room and board, supplies, trips and entertainment, and transportation to and from the airport.

Summer Art Academy

Aspiring chefs ages 7 to 16 can attend the Summer Art Academy’s weekly culinary camps in Pasadena, California, from June 28 through Sept. 3. Camp sessions are five days a week with morning classes from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon classes from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Weekly camp rates are £240, which include the supply fee for a chef apron, hat and recipe CD. Class sizes are 20 to 25 campers who work in groups to make recipes. Classes are taught by talented chefs who not only teach basic cooking techniques but also discuss nutrition, kitchen safety, food chemistry and culinary terms.
