The way teachers' present information in the classroom has evolved over the years from the blackboard, to a whiteboard and now many utilise interactive whiteboards such as the SMART Board. SMART Board activities present engaging digital lessons on to the preschool classroom board covering a broad range of topics from early literacy to popular early education thematic units.

Cycle of Seasons

Available from SMART Exchange by SMART technologies, the makers of the SMART board, Cycle of Seasons offer an interactive preschool activity that teaches students about the four seasons. First, the seasons are presented to the students and then you proceed through a series of slides that ask the children to identify objects that coincide with them. The objects include clothing for the different seasons as well as activities the students may do in each of the seasons.

Counting Goats

A fun and colourful preschool SMART Board activity, "Counting Goats" begins with an introduction informing children that Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep and requires their help to count them. Once the SMART Board activity begins, random numbers of sheep appear on the screen, one through five, and the students count them. The interactive whiteboard activity introduces counting to preschoolers and would work well coordinated with an early literacy unit on Little Bo Peep.

Down on the Farm

A social studies SMART Board activity for the preschool classroom, "Down on the Farm" presents children with a movie on farm animals, tests their memory on names of animals and includes the sounds the animals make. The activity, presented courtesy of SMART Exchange, includes language arts and math skills with activities such as sorting, counting and rhyming with the farm animals. The activity is a logical addition to any preschool thematic unit on farm animals and provides a list of standards for the teacher's curriculum planning needs.

Nina's Naming Game

The first level of the "Building Language for Literacy" portion of a Scholastic interactive activity, "Nina the Naming Newt" introduces new words to preschoolers as they visit locations with Nina. The SMART board compatible activity starts with a main page consisting of 12 locations such as a home and a supermarket. After a location is chosen, items--some that belong in the location and some that do not--appear on the screen along with a box. The students must decide which items belong in the location and in the box.

Science can be a fun topic for preschoolers and this SMART Board activity allows you to bring the science of plants to life with an interactive presentation. The SMART exchange activity is appropriate for preschool through third grade, with the teacher simply skipping over the slides that may be too advanced for the preschool classroom. Students will see the parts of a plant as they are labelled, learn about the life cycle, what a seed is and have the opportunity to sort out plants and animals.
