Edible cake decorating ideas used to limit the design and theme possibilities for the fancy dessert. However, these days you can create almost any cake with 100 per cent edible decorations. Popular decoration materials include frosting, icing, moulded sugar shapes, gum paste, marzipan and fondant. Fondant is an edible, thick, claylike sugar icing. It can be flavoured, coloured and shaped in any way, making it king among cake decorating selections.

Clown Face Decorating

A clown's face is a cheerful and versatile theme that works well with edible cake decorations. The basic consists of a two-layer, round cake with smooth white frosting. Black frosting-outlined white icing circles with blue frosted pupils form the clown's eyes. Yellow frosting forms colourful circles around each eye.

A maraschino cherry forms the clown's nose and a strip of red liquorice rope outlines his mouth. Pink and white frosting form the clown's mouth and heavy red frosting swirls and red coconut form curly clown's hair. A blue fondant ruffle with white sugar dots forms his collar and an orange icing flower decorates his cheek.

Garden Cake Decorating

Turn a two-layer sheet cake into a bright and colourful garden scene with the creative use of coconut, fondant and gummy worms. Grass green coconut-covered frosting forms the lawn-like base for the rectangular sheet cake. Premade, chilled, small fondant pansies in lilac, yellow and white create a scattering of flowers for a natural garden feel. Random gummy worms and tiny fondant ladybirds peek out from beneath the coconut grass for an amusing accent.

Gross Brain Decorating

Freak guest out with a bug-covered, brain-shaped dessert that looks gross, but tastes great. The dessert base consists of a dome cake with a light coat of pink buttercream frosting. Thin greyish-pink strips of fondant cover the cake and form lumpy lobes to give the cake a brain appearance. Tiny trickles of red icing along the lower cake provide the look of blood. Fondant decorations on and around the cake can include yellowish-white maggots, black flies with white wings and green worms.

Lady's Hat Decorating

Combine a large round cake with a small dome cake to create a dessert that resembles a woman's fancy hat. The dessert base consists of a single, large round cake with a small dome cake on top. Basket-weave patterned ivory fondant covers the cakes to create a uniform hat shape. White frosting rosettes along the sides of the round cake create the look of lacy trim. Red rose, yellow sunflower and green ivy sugar shapes provide colourful decorations along the bottom of the fondant ribbon.

Polka Dot Decorating

Polka dot cake decorations create an impressive dessert with an ultra-modern look. The basic cake consists of a large, round, lilac fondant-covered cake topped with a medium, round, cream fondant-covered cake. Small red, small blue, medium orange, medium green and large yellow sugar dots decorate both cakes. A thin purple and white fondant ribbon provides a horizontal trim along the bottom of the large cake. A matching fondant "ribbon" forms a large, six-loop bow on top of the medium cake for a fancy touch.
