Greece is the birthplace of democracy and the Olympic Games. If you're from Greece--or have a friend who is--you might want to select Greek-themed gifts for such events as birthdays, anniversaries and special events. Such presents also work well as a thank-you for Greek festival volunteers. Greek-inspired gifts can range from traditional foods to memorabilia.

Gyros Kit

Give your friend or loved one a gyros kit so she can quickly cook her favourite Greek food. Gyros, which are a staple of Greek cuisine, are sandwiches made with pita bread. Pita bread is shaped like a circle--it often is cut in half to create two pita pockets. A pita pocket usually is filled with beef, chicken or lamb mixed with such vegetables as onions, tomatoes and lettuce. Kits usually include tzatziki sauce, which is a creamy sandwich topping made with such ingredients as cucumbers, yoghurt and olive oil. Look for gyros kits at speciality markets.

Greek God Statue

Select a statue of a Greek god for display inside a home or choose a patio decoration, such as a water fountain display with a Greek god in the centre. Popular Greek gods include Aphrodite, the goddess of love; Apollo, the god of music, poetry and archery; Poseidon, the god of the waters who is depicted with a trident; and Zeus, the king of the gods, typically shown with either a thunderbolt or a sceptre in his hand.

Olympic Games

The Olympic Games originated in Olympia, Greece. Give your loved one memorabilia from these historic games. Select a set of DVDs that focus on the first Olympic Games, coffee table books covering specific years or a framed print from the games. You also can choose from such Olympic souvenirs as banners and apparel.

Baklava

Baklava is a well-known traditional Greek dessert. This treat includes filo dough, or thin sheets of pastry, brushed with butter. The dessert is made by alternating layers of pastry sheets with a mixture of chopped nuts tossed with such spices as nutmeg and cinnamon. The baklava is baked and a syrup of lemon, water and sugar immediately is poured over the layered dessert. Bake this dessert at home or buy it from a Greek restaurant or market.

Greek Gift Basket

Put together a basket of items inspired by Greece and Greek cuisine. Include grape leaves, olive oil, canned olives, pita bread, honey and pine nuts. Add a Greek cookbook so your gift recipient can try traditional Greek recipes. For a friend who enjoys spirits, include a bottle of ouzo, which is an anise-flavoured liqueur. Add a copy of the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
