Creative Ideas for Employee Recognition in the Workplace

A national poll conducted by Maritz Research showed that 55 per cent of workers say that an employer's recognition program affects how employees perform; 90 per cent of those polled weren't completely satisfied with recognition efforts at their current companies. While you can't meet every employee's needs all of the time, you may be able to improve your program by thinking of simple yet creative ideas to reward each employee for his efforts.

Decorate His Desk

Before the employee comes in for his shift, hire someone to decorate his desk with a banner, flowers or a gift and a handwritten card from the supervisor. All of his co-workers will pass by his desk and see that he is being honoured for great work. This simple yet thoughtful recognition gift could cause your employee to beam all day long and make him eager to continue performing well at the company. It could also encourage other employees to work harder to achieve this type of recognition from the company.

Happy Hour or Dinner In The Employee's Honor

A fun yet meaningful recognition gift is a dinner or outing in the employee's honour. Instead of organising a standard outing with co-workers, invite the employee to a private dinner or happy hour with key members of the management team. This will allow her to feel more connected to the management of the company and discuss her work in a relaxed environment. This could encourage her to continue her positive trend at the company and set her sights on a possible promotion in the future. If you're trying to save money, honour three or more people at a time at each dinner---you can hold one happy hour or dinner each month.

You Choose

You do not have to offer just one type of reward for employee recognition. Offer the employee a choice of various awards. This will help address the specific needs and desires of each individual employee. Some workers want something symbolic, like a trophy, while others want money or cash incentives. You could also tailor the award to the specific actions that drove you to recognise the employee. For instance, if the employee is recognised for good attendance and promptness, reward him with a day off.
