Birdcage veils and other accessories are an easy way to add vintage flair to your short hair. (flower in bride hair hairstyle image by Paul Retherford from

If you take your cue from gorgeous hairstyles of the past but have short hair, it may be difficult to find a look that could work for you on your big day. By keeping looks simple, you'll be able to keep stress---and hairdresser costs---to a minimum for your ceremony and photos.

Finger waves

This Jean Harlow-inspired look uses only some styling cream and your own fingers. After you've worked in the styling product all the way through damp hair, make a deep side part and wrap a 1-inch section up and over your middle finger in an accordion shape, using a comb to keep it scrunched up and holding its shape. After you've wrapped the hair all the way from root to tip, clip the ridges against the side of your head. Repeat throughout your hair and let it air-dry. When it's completely dry, take the clips out but do not brush through. Add a short birdcage veil.

Curly in headbands

This style works well with very curly hair when you want to incorporate your natural texture. Depending on the way you style it, this look can look extremely vintage--as in Ancient Greece vintage. Work your styling product throughout your hair; use something that increases shine and defines your curl. After you've blow-dried, slip on a thin, white headband just a bit behind your hairline, letting some curls peek through the front. Add one to two more of the same type of headband slightly behind the first.

Bouffant with barrette

Channel '60s retro styles by giving a little lift and volume to the back of your hair. To achieve this style, lift the back of your hair at the crown as you backcomb---moving the comb in the opposite direction that hair grows--the underlayers. Spray underside with hairspray and keep lifted for a minute or so as the spray dries and sets. Smooth the top hair over the bouffant so that it looks even. Slip in a vintage hair clip or barrette on one side just above the forehead, but in front of the bouffant bump.

Take inspiration from former style icon Jackie "O" with a sleek bob. Although it's an unconventional choice for the formality of a wedding, it's simple way to look polished and chic. Get bonus points if you add a white satin pillbox hat with a short veil.
