Soothsayers are individuals who see the future. The literal meaning of a soothsayer is someone who tells the truth, although in most cases the term refers to predictions or omens from psychic means. Soothsayers might derive their predictions from visions or psychic divination, or they might be observers who base predictions on logical facts, such as a soothsayer who sees someone doing something foolish and predicts the individual will become injured. Soothsayer costumes are widely variable depending on the type of soothsayer.

Gypsy Costume

In many areas of the world, the character that comes to mind when thinking of a soothsayer is the gypsy fortune teller. The gypsy costume is one of bright colours and interesting designs. The gypsy fortune teller was an individual, usually female, who told fortunes through various means. For example, she might tell your future through a palm reading or tea leaves. For a gypsy costume, wear several layers of brightly-coloured skirts, a headscarf to match the skirts and a peasant shirt or off-the-shoulder shirt. Add a corset and wear your hair down or obtain a wig. Add sandals and anklets to complete the look. Alternatively, you can buy the costume online at Halloween stores or through any costume store.

Witch-Like Soothsayer

Soothsayers were sometimes classified as witches, as seen in Shakespeare's "Macbeth." To create something more sinister and creepy for a Halloween soothsayer costume, wear a basic dress in black topped with a semi-sheer overdress that is sliced up or grubby-looking and uneven. Add a few fake cobwebs and make-up to make your face look dirty. A grey and white streaked wig and crystal ball completes the look. This gives the appearance of an old-fashioned witch who has lost touch with the mundane world, but is able to see things others cannot.

Roman Oracle

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed in oracles who acted as soothsayers. For this type of soothsayer costume, wear a pure white toga or a sheet drawn around you to form a toga by tying it at the shoulder. For an oracle, wear the full-length toga in pure white to represent mysticism.

Puritan Witch

The Salem witch trials were a time of fear of the unknown. Among the supposed "witches" of the time was a fortune teller named Martha Carrier. To dress as this type of soothsayer, wear a full-length black dress with long sleeves. Tie a white apron is around the waist and cover your head and shoulders with a white, short cloak with a hood. Alternatively, you can buy the costume online.
