The 21st birthday is considered by many the definitive end of childhood and beginning of adulthood. A 21-year-old has gained the full rights and responsibilities of a citizen. It can be a thrilling and sentimental time in a young adult's life. One way to record this special occasion is to make an album to hold the memories of all the excitement and changes.

Childhood Album

Make a scrapbook with a section for every year of his life. Add photographs, especially the hospital birth photo and school pictures. Include programs from plays and concerts in which he performed, scouting badges, school awards and a copy of his high school diploma. Make a page for each hobby, and pages for friends and family. The finished product should be a fun review of the life that made him who he is today.

Memory Album

For a one-of-a-kind gift, send a letter to each of the birthday girl's friends and relatives. Tell them that you are creating a memory album for her 21st birthday, and ask them to send you a letter containing a favourite memory of the two of them together, a piece of advice for a young adult just starting out in the world and a birthday wish for her. If they have a picture of the two of them together, ask them to send you a copy. Combine the letters and photographs in a scrapbook. Start this project several weeks before her birthday. The more letters you can get, the better the album will be--ask her friends and family for the names of childhood coaches, favourite teachers and neighbourhood friends you might not know.

Party Day Album

A "day in the life" album makes a fun gift. Spend the night with the birthday boy so that you can begin your photo essay from the moment he wakes up in the morning. Follow him through all his coming-of-age celebrations, whether they include a visit to his church, lunch with friends or his first legal trip to a bar. Include brochures, napkins, matchbook covers and other memorabilia from his day. This album is a good accompaniment to a 21st birthday trip, such as a wine country tour or a Las Vegas excursion.
