Go beyond the typical restaurant gift cards, clothing items or sporting equipment often presented to boyfriends as birthday presents. Express your creativity and your love for your significant other by making a meaningful gift with craft supplies and simple techniques. Design a project that reflects the time you've spent together and your appreciation for his favourites and interests.

Graffiti Frame

Design a picture frame embellished with personal messages that your boyfriend can use to display a favourite photo of you. Buy a wide wood frame designed to hold a 5-by-7-inch picture at a craft or framing store. Use paint pens to doodle and write song lyrics, nicknames or inside jokes on the wood portion of the frame. If desired, seal the artwork with a coat of découpage medium sold at scrapbooking or craft shops. Enclose a picture in the frame or use the birthday craft to hold an additional gift, such as a pair of concert or baseball game tickets stashed beneath the glass.

Refrigerator Magnets

Make a handmade gift that your boyfriend can use to display "to do" lists, reminders about upcoming special events or pictures of the two of you on a refrigerator or magnetic notice board. Design pebble-style refrigerator magnets by buying 1- to 2-inch-wide, flat-bottomed glass pebbles at a craft store.

Trim snippets from pictures or memorabilia such as ticket stubs to movies you saw together or brochures from a recent sightseeing expedition so they're the same size as the bottom of the clear pebbles. Place a dab of clear epoxy sold at craft stores on the bottom of a pebble and press it onto one of the picture or paper titbits, pushing until you've removed all of the air bubbles. Let the epoxy dry, and then affix a flat magnet to the back of the pebble with adhesive dots.

Hobby Scrapbook

Give your boyfriend a place to keep photographs and memorabilia from his favourite pastimes by creating a simple scrapbook for him. Buy a spiral-bound scrapbook album at a scrapbook or craft store and embellish the pages with patterned paper, stickers and die cuts that suit his hobby. Create blank card stock photo mats on each page where he can easily affix 4-by-6-inch images. Also leave empty spots on the page where he can write captions to describe the events depicted in the photos.

Personalised Calendar

Design a meaningful boyfriend gift he can use to keep track of upcoming appointments, vacations, birthdays and anniversaries. Buy a full-sized, blank calendar at a scrapbooking, craft or stationery store. Use the top half of each calendar page to create a scrapbook-style collage featuring photos of the two of you, memorabilia from dates, anniversaries or vacations and handwritten messages, inspirational quotes or love notes. Fill in the names of important dates on the calendar portion of the project.
