Having your church or Christian organisation participate in a Christmas parade is a great way to connect with and support your local community. It will also help provide exposure for your church and market to the community that you are a family-friendly church, welcoming all people. You can approach the Christian Christmas parade float from several different perspectives, depending on the message you want to send and the image you want to portray. Whether you take a traditional approach or a more progressive and modern approach will depend on the audience you want to reach.

The Nativity

The traditional nativity scene can be created on a parade float to highlight the true meaning of the Christmas season, which is Christ's birth. Volunteers can dress up like the adult characters of the nativity such as Mary, Joseph and the wise men. Real animals can be rented ... use them for a touch of reality, or use plastic or stuffed animals if you're on a smaller budget. A small sound system can play traditional Christmas hymns that celebrate Christ's birth.

The Choir

The church choir can be the main attraction of the Christmas float. Using risers, you can position the entire choir on the float. Position a decorated Christmas tree on the front of the float, affix garland and lights around the perimeter and use traditional Christmas decorations like holly, mistletoe, evergreen boughs, etc., as complementary accents. The choir can perform during the entire parade, so no audio equipment is needed. The people in the choir can wear either traditional choir robes or street clothing in coordinated Christmas colours.

The Family

A float can be decorated to look like a family's living room with a fireplace, Christmas tree and stockings. A real family from your church can ride on the float and wave to the onlookers. On the front or the back of the float, hang a banner with a quote from the scriptures that promotes family values. This type of float will communicate that Christmas is about being together as a family and that your church is able to minister to all of the family's needs. A small sound system can be used to play Christmas music.
