Cross-stitching is an enjoyable needlework hobby for many people. You have the options of making by hand an entire table runner with your own cross-stitch design, purchasing a hand-stitched table runner, buying a kit complete with all materials and tools, or reusing a cross-stitch pattern on table-runner fabric.

Create Your Own Design

Make your own table runner from scratch. You need graph paper that consists of 10 squares to the inch, a pencil, ruler, eraser, sharpener, crayons and tracing paper. Once you decide on an image, either trace the outline or draw it freehand. Transfer the image to graph paper. Decide which colours of floss (thread) you want to use in which area of the design. Purchase the runner material and thread, then follow your graph pattern to cross-stitch the runner.

Purchase a Handmade Table Runner

If you like the look of a handmade cross-stitched table runner but don't have the time to make it yourself, purchase one that has been handmade by someone else. You may purchase handmade, completed cross-stitch table runners online, and you may be able to purchase one at a needlework or craft store. Other options are garage sales, craft shows and flea markets. Consider a Victorian cross-stitch table runner if you find one at an antique store or auction.

Stamped Cross-stitch Kits

Purchase a cross-stitch kit online or at a craft store to make your own table runner. Kits include the cotton floss, instructions and the runner. You choose the size of the table runner and the design, such as flowers, butterflies, harvest, birds or an elegant scroll. Some kits include napkins to cross-stitch as well.

Use Previous Designs

If you are a diehard cross-stitcher, you probably have a stack of cross-stitch patterns you have used in the past for other kinds of needlework projects. You can make a table runner with a cross-stitch pattern you already have by cross-stitching the design or part of the design o to a piece of long fabric to make a table runner.
