Sony VAIO is a sub-brand of Sony computer products that originally was an acronym for Video Audio Integrated Operation. It was amended to Visual Audio Intelligence Organizer in 2008 in celebration of the brand's 10th anniversary. For the latest Sony VAIO laptop and netbook releases, as in most laptop products available in the market, built-in webcams come standard. Webcam effects available for each Sony VAIO laptop may vary by model, but they share the same software bundle and compatibility for third-party webcam programs.
Webcams on Sony VAIO Laptops
The Sony VAIO has evolved through the years. Past laptops were released under the X, P and W Series. Some laptop models had built-in webcams as standard features, while some had them as optional ones. As of June 2011, Sony VAIO's current personal notebooks include the EC, F, CB CA and SB Series. Current business notebooks, called VAIO Professional, include the TT, Z, SR, BZ and G Series. All these releases have built-in webcams with ready-to-use webcam effects.
Sony Software Bundle
Sony VAIO laptops provide users with the Sony software bundle that contains the native programs webcam Companion and Magic-i Visual Effects. These provide a library of photo and video effects for the laptop's built-in camera. They allow users to personalise their video chats, play with interactive webcam themes and use avatars and various visual effects including face size alterations, colour changes on the photo or video and a face-centring feature so that the user's face can be kept on the centre of the screen even if the actual face moves beyond the centre of the camera.
Webcam Features and Effects
Basic effects typically provided in most Sony VAIO models include the thermal, black-and-white, sepia and fish-eye looks. Other popular effects include the X-ray, colour pencil, comic book, glow and pop art looks. Many models also provide a wide array of special frames and backgrounds that can be placed over the photo or video. Low-end VAIO models usually offer lower-resolution photos and videos with their cameras compared to medium- and high-end VAIO models. More expensive VAIO laptops already have a high-definition (HD) feature on their cameras.
Third-party Software Effects
There are many third-party software programs that can be used with Sony VAIO laptops for additional webcam features and effects. Some of these are available for free, while some offer a trial that potential buyers can use for a limited time before deciding whether to buy. Programs include WebcamMax, CyberLink YouCam, Camersoft webcam Capture, webcam Saver, webcam Dashboard, webcam 1-2-3 and AV webcam Morpher. Many of these programs allow placing a person's face over interesting backgrounds such as clouds, a forest, underwater scenery or world landmarks. Others have special spaces for custom-made backgrounds personally created or chosen by users themselves.
