Split screen is a popular technique in videos of all categories, from instructional videos to narrative films. Viewers are savvy and can process separate images juxtaposed without difficulty. Most professional and consumer video programs offer the option to create split-screen video, though the methods are different.

Apple Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro is a popular video editing program for the Mac. Split screen is relatively simple to achieve in Final Cut. Select two pieces of footage to use for a split screen and make sure they are the same duration. Layer one on a video track above the other. Select the top track and choose "Motion" in the Viewer. Under Crop, drag the Left or Right lever over to the desired place in the frame for your screen split. Typically for a two-part split screen, you will want the split at the 50 per cent point.

Sony Vegas

Sony Vegas is a popular video editing program for the PC. Split screen is relatively simple to achieve in Sony Vegas. Similar to the process in Final Cut Pro, isolate the two pieces of footage and layer them on video tracks. Select the top track and choose "Track Motion." Move the frame to the side, watching in your Video view screen where the frame moves. Move the bottom track in the opposite direction.

Adobe Premiere

Adobe Premiere is another popular video editing program for the PC. For a split screen with this software, after putting each video clip on its own track, select the top track and choose "Effects." Select "Video Effects," "Transform" and "Crop." Set the Crop left or right percentage to your desired screen split location. Typically this will be 50 per cent for a down-the-middle split. Repeat the action for the lower piece of video, cropping in the opposite direction.

Avid Media Composer

Avid Media Composer is considered the industry standard editing software, available for the Mac and PC. Once the video is layered on tracks, select "Avid Effects" and choose any of the several effects that include the crop tool (such as Blend). Drag the effect down to your top track. Open the Effect Editor and choose "Crop." Drag the left or right lever over to the desired screen-split point. Typically this will be 50 per cent.
