Homemade concoctions can be substituted for store-bought skin care items to save money and to use all-natural products on the skin. Gelatin is an ingredient extracted from animal skin and bone and contains collagen-like characteristics that strengthen skin elasticity as well as protein to strengthen hair.

Homemade Facial Masks

Tighten the skin by applying a gelatin facial mask combined with other natural ingredients to soothe and degrease. Combine 1/2 cup of powdered gelatin with 1 cup of hot tap water and stir until dissolved to create 1 cup of gelatin liquid. Mix 1/2 cup of the gelatin liquid with 1/4 cup of lemon juice and apply to the face with a cotton ball. Allow it to dry for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Oatmeal has soothing properties and 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal can be mixed with 1/4 cup of gelatin liquid and 1/2 tsp of honey to create a homemade oatmeal mask. Apply and dry for 15 to 20 minutes and rinse with warm water.

A combination of ingredients with unflavored, powdered gelatin can be used to cleanse the skin through either a grainy scrub or by applying to the nose and allowing it to dry as a homemade blackhead removal mask. Combine 1/2 tsp of cornmeal with 1/2 tsp powdered gelatin and wet your face with lukewarm water. Massage the grains into the face to scrub and exfoliate, avoiding the eye area, and rinse with warm water. Mix 1 tbsp of powdered gelatin and 1 tbsp of milk in a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 10 seconds and apply to the nose area with a make-up brush. Allow to dry for 10 minutes and peel away in lieu of using expensive pore strips.

Hair Care

Add powdered gelatin and water to your shampoo bottle to increase the protein content which may strengthen and improve the look of your hair, in addition to making shampoo last longer and saving you money. Add half a packet of unflavored gelatin with half of the water stated on the package directions. Pour the mixture into your 236ml. shampoo bottle, shake and mix well, and use as the shampoo directs. Homemade hair gel can also be made with 1 tsp of gelatin combined with 1 cup of water. Keep the mixture refrigerated and apply as normal hair gel.

Health Benefits

In addition to topical remedies, gelatin has other health benefits to improve the state and look of your entire body. Dr. Bernard Cole's research and Nutra Sanus state that ingesting gelatin can reduce the loss of bone collagen, reduce the damage caused by osteoporosis and keep your bones strong and straight. The study also suggests that gelatin intake can reduce the pain caused by arthritis and increase nail strength. The recommended dosage is achieved by mixing 2 heaping tsp of unflavored gelatin powder with 1/2 cup of fruit juice and drinking the beverage.
