Create ripped shirts as part of a fashion statement or for a Halloween costume. Make entirely new shirts out of old ones by making rips in specific places, or pay homage to '80s style by ripping the necklines of sweatshirts and T-shirts. Pair a ripped shirt with ripped jeans, or stick to one ripped clothing item only.

Ripped Back

A ripped back design works on any type of T-shirt, from basic tees to fitted tees to v neck tees and beyond. Create thin, horizontal slits along the back of the shirt. All pieces remain connected, and the result is a striped look of thin shirt pieces. The holes should be large enough to cover at least half of your back. Such shirts can be purchased if your scissor skills are less than stellar.

Off-the-Shoulder

The off-the-shoulder ripped sweater look was immortalised by Jennifer Beals in the '80s classic film "Flashdance" and has continually come back into style. Simply cut the necklines of sweaters to create this off-the-shoulder look, or do the same on old t- shirts. Take this style to the next level by cutting the entire neckline out of the shirt and fitting the remaining material over both shoulders. Tie any loose material around the sleeves together to keep the shirt in place on your shoulders.

Tee to Tank

Revamp an old T-shirt by ripping it into a tank top. Remove the sleeves and cut around the bottom of the shirt; how much of the shirt to cut depends on how much of your midriff you want to expose. Trim the "sleeves" as necessary to create a tank top style. Add more rips, if desired, to the back or front of the top by creating holes with scissors and ripping them.

Costume Design Ideas

Create ripped shirts for costumes, such as by using a ripped flannel shirt for a zombie costume. There is no wrong way to do this. Ideas including ripping the shirt along the bottom, tearing at the breast pocket(s), creating rips along the sleeves or ripping one sleeve off completely. Make a "Larry the Cable Guy" or "redneck" shirt by ripping off both sleeves on a denim or flannel shirt.
