Whether you are dressing up for Halloween, the Fourth of July, or to commemorate a holiday like President's Day, a well-designed patriotic costume can make a big splash at a party, parade or other social event. With such a rich history, the United States offers plenty of themed costume ideas that are easily recognisable.

U.S. Presidents

A presidential costume can be easy to put together, but may require more effort for costumes from earlier times in U.S. history. You could start with a simple contemporary suit and a patriotic red or blue tie and then add campaign buttons and other items to distinguish yourself as a specific modern president.

A plastic mask can help you look like John F. Kennedy or Barack Obama. Gray hair dye or a white period-style can help transform your look into that of George Washington or John Adams. An Abraham Lincoln costume can be completed with a beard and a top hat. Some websites offer complete presidential costumes for sale.

Famous Women

If you wish to celebrate the famous women who helped shape American history, put together a patriotic costume by using period clothing and well-placed accessories. An apron and a bonnet are an ideal foundation for your outfit. You can then easily transform into Betsy Ross by carrying a flag and a sewing kit. A Molly Pitcher costume can be completed, appropriately, by carrying a pitcher of water or your chosen libation. You can also wear a long white dress and a banner that says "Votes for Women" as a suffragist costume.

Soldiers & Generals

If you're celebrating Memorial Day, Veteran's Day or Halloween, a soldier costume is a great way to honour America's servicemen and women. If you hope to look like a Revolutionary War soldier, a tri-corner hat and a musket are necessities. More modern soldier costumes can be completed with boots, camouflage garb, a helmet and a toy gun. To go the extra mile, you can dress as a famous general like George Washington or Douglas MacArthur by mimicking their appearance and wearing appropriate accessories.

Patriotic Icons

If you don't want to dress up as a specific historical figure, but still wish to honour the United States, wearing the costume of a fictional patriotic icon is the ideal compromise. A Lady Liberty costume can be purchased or made from scratch; just be sure to wear her signature pointed hat and carry a torch. Uncle Sam is another recognisable icon whose costume can be replicated with an American flag jacket, white trousers, a top hat and a distinctive beard.
