Updated November 21, 2016

Blowing out the candles on a birthday cake is something that most children anticipate all year long. When a child is turning 8 years old, create a birthday cake that is fitting of the occasion. Design that goes hand-in-hand with one of the child's interests or hobbies, or tailor the cake so that it fits with the theme of the party.

Sports Cake

Create a sports-themed cake for a little boy who is interested in playing sports. Bake a cake that looks like the ball used in his favourite sport. For example, if he is into baseball, bake a round cake and frost it with white icing. Pipe black icing onto the cake to create the baseball's laces. Other round balls can be created using a similar process. Achieve a football shape by baking a round cake and cutting a strip out of its centre. Put the two remaining pieces together, and you will be left with an oblong football shape.

Princess Cake

When you are creating a birthday cake for an 8-year-old girl who loves princesses, take that interest as your inspiration. Bake a cake and frost it with pink icing. Bake a layer cake so that the cake has a bit of height. Then, purchase a tiara from a party store and wash and dry it thoroughly. Place the tiara on the top of the cake to create a simple princess cake that will have a lot of impact.

Animal Cake

Eight-year-old boys can be interested in animals. Bake a birthday cake for the little boy that is shaped like his favourite animal. One way to achieve an animal cake is to make it out of cupcakes. Bake a batch of cupcakes and place them onto a large cake platter in the shape of his animal. Frost the cupcakes so that they look like the animal as well.

Cartoon Character

If you're making a birthday cake for a child who likes a certain cartoon character, look for a pan shaped like the cartoon character from a speciality baking shop or online. Then, all you have to do is pour the cake batter into the pan, bake it and allow it to cool. Use coloured frosting to make the frosting look even more like the cartoon character. A wide variety of shaped pans are available, from classic cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny to more current characters. You can also purchase edible images, which are frosting sheets of characters made from edible food colouring inks that you can place on top of a cake.
