Mystery Cake Ideas

Updated November 21, 2016

When you are planning a murder mystery party, consider creating a mystery cake that matches the theme. Most of these parties involve a mystery story in which all of the guests play a role and have to figure out who the murderer is. There are all sorts of cakes that are appropriate for a murder mystery party.

Question Mark

Because the party is all about solving a mystery, consider baking a cake that looks like a question mark. Bake a round cake and cut it so that it makes a C shape. Use that cake as the upper section of the question mark. A loaf cake can serve as the bottom portion of the question mark. Cut the rounded tops off the cakes so that they look level. Frost them and use frosting to conceal the seams between the cake so that they look like they are joined. Use a cupcake as the dot on the end of the question mark.

Consider making a cake that is shaped like a weapon. For example, bake a rectangular cake and carve it into the shape of a weapon using a serrated knife. Place the cake inside the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before shaping the cake so that it does not crumble. You could carve several different types of weapons out of the cake, such as a revolver, a knife or an axe. If you choose a knife or an axe, use red frosting to create plenty of blood dripping from it.

Crime Scene Tape

An easy way to create a mystery cake is to choose a crime scene tape cake. Bake a round or square cake and frost it using simple white icing. Then, frost only the sides of the cake with bright yellow frosting. The sides of the cake will serve as the actual crime scene tape. Then, place black frosting in a pastry bag and pipe the words "crime scene" on the yellow tape.

Body Outline

One way to create a murder mystery cake is by piping a body outline onto the cake. Bake a simple cake and frost it in whatever colour you want. Place white frosting in a pastry bag and draw the outline of a body onto the top of the cake. If you want, place plastic weapon figurines around the body. Be sure to wash the figurines thoroughly before placing them onto the cake.
