Sombreros are the traditional hats of Mexico. The large round hats are still worn today for special occasions and often used in Mexican decor and for decorating Mexican-themed parties. Create a paper Mexican sombrero out of simple craft materials.

Paper Plate and Cup Sombrero

Turn a paper plate and paper cup into a sombrero. The paper plate will serve as the brim of the sombrero. Turn the cup upside down on the middle of the paper plate and glue. The cup will create the top part of the sombrero. Paint both the plate and cup with tempera paint. Decorate the sombrero with sequins and pom-poms. This sombrero craft would work well as an activity for a Mexican party, or could be used as a decor item.

Wrapping Paper Sombrero

Use foiled wrapping paper, as this type of paper holds its shape. Cut about three feet of foiled wrapping paper. Turn a bowl upside down on a table. If you want to wear the sombrero, be sure that the bowl is large enough to fit on your head. Put the paper on the top of bowl and press the paper around the bowl to create a mould over it. To add stability to the hat, you can cut a doughnut-shaped ring the same size as the hat brim and glue it to the underside of the wrapping paper hat. Embellish with rickrack or pom-poms.

Sombrero Garland

Draw simple sombrero images on yellow paper or on paper in other colours. Cut out the images and glue the cut-out sombreros to a ribbon to create a garland. You can alternate sombreros with chilli peppers and Mexican flags, or use only sombrero images in multiple colours. This garland creates a festive look for a Mexican-themed party.

Sombrero Nut Cups

Sombrero nut cups are easy to make and are an unexpected addition to a Mexican party table. Turn a paper nut cup over on a piece of paper. Cut a larger circle around the nut cup, leaving room for a brim, and trace around the nut cup. Cut the smaller hole out and fit the paper circle (doughnut-shaped) ring around the nut cup. You can fringe the edges of the hat and add embroidery floss and sequins for decoration.
