Hollywood Party Cake Ideas

Updated March 23, 2017

Novice and professional cake decorators alike can make a centrepiece-worthy cake for a Hollywood-themed party. Consider the focus of the party's theme when choosing the cake, such as whether the party centres on Hollywood movie stars, movies, award programs or just the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Choose a cake design that complements the party's focus, and decorate the cake with fondant, sugar paste and buttercream icing.

Academy Awards Cake

For a semi-formal Hollywood-themed party, make a two-tier cake topped with an imitation Oscar statue. Prepare a 10-inch and an 8-inch round, two-layer cake. Turn the first cake into a movie reel with black and white fondant. Decorate the second cake with other Academy Award-related ideas, such as fondant tuxedos or ball gowns, movie clapboards, stars or edible frosting image movie posters all the way around the cake. Top the cake with a store-bought imitation Oscar. Artistic cake decorators can also mould the Oscar decoration from fondant and cover it with gold lustre dust.

Clapboard Cake

Make a cake in the shape of a movie clapboard for a Hollywood-themed party. Make a two-layer rectangular cake and carefully cut off a 2-inch-long strip lengthwise from the cake. Place the 2-inch strip above the cake on an angle, touching the cake at one side. Cover the entire cake and 2-inch strip in a thin layer of buttercream icing and cover the icing with a sheet of black fondant, Make white diagonal stripes along the 2-inch strip and along the top 2 inches of the cake. Use white icing and a pastry bag with round icing tip to make the lines across the clapboard cake. Use a picture of a clapboard as a guide to where the lines should be drawn.

Movie Reel Cake

Make a three or four-tier movie reel cake for an elegant Hollywood party centrepiece. Make four single-layer cakes and cover each with a thin layer of buttercream icing. Make eight, ΒΌ-inch-thick circles from sheets of rolled out fondant, and place one on the bottom and one on the top of each cake. Cut four strips of white fondant that are each large enough to wrap around and cover the sides of each cake. Wrap one strip around each cake and add black buttercream icing detailing to turn the strips into film. Alternatively, decorate the fondant film strips with edible frosting images of the guest of honour. Insert two wooden dowels into three of the cakes and stack the film reels randomly on top of each other.

Walk of Fame Cake

Make a cake that looks like a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Prepare a large two-layer square cake and cover it in a thin layer of buttercream icing. Roll out a sheet of grey or black fondant and place it over the top and sides of the cake. Roll out a pink-tinted fondant and cut out a star large enough to cover most of the cake. Place the star on the cake. Mix yellow buttercream icing with gold lustre dust to make gold icing and then use a pastry bag with round icing tip to write the name of the guest of honour on the star.
