The '80s were a decade of big hair, pop star icons, cinematic successes and cartoon launches. Dress up in the style of Madonna, be pretty in pink as Molly Ringwald, get rid of bad guys as a ninja turtle or create your own '80s costume. Stand out this Halloween by dressing up in the style of the notable 1980s.

Pop Stars

Dress in the style of your favourite '80s pop star. Embody Madonna's "Material Girl" look by teasing up your hair, wearing heavy eye make-up and lots of jewellery. Dress in layers, including a black tank top or bustier, blazer, skirt, leggings and black boots. Consider fingerless gloves as an additional accessory. Men can mimic Michael Jackson's iconic look by putting together a costume consisting of a red jacket, a white glove, white socks with black patent leather shoes, black trousers rolled up to the ankles, and a black fedora hat. Consider aviator sunglasses to pull together your Michael Jackson look.

Movie Characters

Certain movie characters from the popular films of the '80s are universally recognised thanks to a few key outfit pieces. Dress like Molly Ringwald in "Pretty In Pink" by wearing her classic hat and blazer outfit or re-creating her pink prom dress. Get into the characters from "Dirty Dancing" in a couples theme. The girlfriend should wear Jennifer Grey's classic button-down midriff-bearing white shirt and cut-off jeans, or a simple pink dress, while the boyfriend should wear Patrick Swayze's classic all-black shirt and jeans outfit.

Cartoon Characters

The '80s launched numerous popular cartoon icons. Dress up on your own or with a group as your favourite cartoon cast. Make an all green and yellow costume and wear a bandanna around your eyes to mimic the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dress up in a G.I. Joe Snake Eyes costume by wearing an all black body suit. Wear a face mask, fake armour and don a fake sword.

Cultural Trends

Dress in some of the biggest fashion trends indicative of the '80s. Replicate fashion trends such as big hair, neon colours and plastic jewellery. For example, a girl wanting to dress in '80s style might wear hot pink leggings, an over sized off-the-shoulder shirt and pumps. Accessorise with costume jewellery, such as coloured bangles and big hoop earrings. Tease up your hair and wear bright eye make-up and lipstick. An '80s guy might dress in rock band shirts, a leather or jean jacket, tight trousers and high-tops.
