Skeleton watches are transparent wristwatches designed so that the inner workings such as springs and cogs can be seen. Designs and styles of skeleton watches vary from maker to maker. Some can be entirely bare bones while others may have a designer faceplate to complement the visible inner mechanism.

The cost of these watches can be from as low as £65 upwards to thousands of dollars for designer brands.

Zenith Chronomaster Baroque

The Zenith Chronomaster Baroque is an automatic wrist watch, which means it's powered by the natural movement of the wearer's arm. This watch has a black and gilded skeleton dial with transparent case back encased in 18 carat yellow gold. The face is covered with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal which is sealed so that it is waterproof up to 100 feet. The black python leather strap with triple folding buckle is a sharp contrast against the watch itself. The Zenith Chronomaster Baroque retailed for around £30,550 in 2011.

Gents Chronoswiss Grand Opus

The Gents Chronoswiss Grand Opus features a scratch-resistant sapphire front and back encasing the skeleton dials in 18 carat rose gold. Straps come in alligator leather but can be swapped out with stainless steel. This self-winding watch is waterproof up to 100 feet. The Chronoswiss sold for £7,150 in 2011.

Corum Perpetual Calendar Skeleton

At an estimated retail of £44,850 in 2011, the Corum Perpetual Calendar Skeleton watch is one of the most expensive skeleton watches today. This platinum watch protects the skeleton, which features a perpetual calendar and moon phase dial. The black leather strap holds this automatic self-winding watch to a wrist with an 18 carat white gold buckle. The case also comes in rose gold.

Cvstos Challenge QP-S

The Cvstos Challenge QP-S is a stainless steel skeleton watch with rubber strap. The most unique feature of this watch is the perpetual day, month and year calendar coupled with a moon phase dial. This automatic watch's back is fully viewable through clear protective crystal. The Cvstos Challenge sells for £17,940 in 2011.

Breguet La Tradition

The intricate and delicate white gold skeleton (also available in yellow gold) is the main attraction of the Breguet La Tradition. Unlike other skeleton watches, which hides the mechanics behind hands and perpetual calendars, this watch puts the dials in the forefront with a small watch dial encased in 18 carat white gold. This hand-wound watch also includes a 50-hour power reserve battery. The watch strap is made of black crocodile leather. The Breguet La Tradition can be bought for £15,600 in 2011.
