Toshiba notebook processors are known as the heart of the computer system. Processors are often referred to as a system's CPU. Similar to a heart functioning, the processor inside a notebook has a great effect on the computer's overall performance. You can upgrade your notebook processor to enhance its performance. Upgrading a processor enables your computer to handle a bigger hard drive or memory card, thus increasing your notebook's overall performance.
Finding the CPU
You must find the CPU to determine if your system is upgradeable. Older Toshiba models such as the Portege A100 will require you to dissemble the notebook from the keyboard to reach the processor inside. Newer Toshiba models such as the Satellite A70 have a bottom compartment that allows you to access the CPU and other upgradeable parts without needing to dissemble the computer.
Determining a Compatible Processing Speed
Smaller-sized and older notebooks may not allow upgrades for the processing speed. Googling your processor model number will help you find the maximum speed it will allow. Before installing the more powerful processor, make sure your BIOS is up to date. Go to the chip manufacturer's website to check for the latest BIOS version. Upgrading to a processor not supported by your BIOS may result in your notebook not booting correctly.
Changing the Processor
When you locate the processor in your Toshiba notebook, you will notice if it has screws, a release bar or is soldered into place. If screws are holding the processor in place, unscrew them and remove the processor. Push the release bar if that is holding your processor in place. Soldered-in processors need professional installation or may not allow for a replacement at all. Once the old processor is removed, insert the new processor. When the processor is aligned correctly it will easily slide into place. Do not push the processor into place, turn it to align it if it appear to need a push.
Reassemble your laptop once your new CPU is in place. Turn on your notebook and look at your BIOS before letting your operating system boot. To go into the BIOS, you will have to hit the correct key to go into Setup. The correct key is usually displayed on the screen as your computer is booting up. Confirm that your computer is recognising the new CPU speed. Reboot your computer and let your operating system load.
