The hacker-community term "softmod" refers to any process that modifies the basic operating system of a particular gaming system, like the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2). Softmods are done to allow the gaming system to work with unauthorised software applications and run hacked or cracked games. Codebreaker is a hacker system utility application that allows softmod files to be installed directly onto the operating system of your PS2. The process of softmodding a PS2 with Codebreaker is fairly straightforward.

Download the Codebreaker application onto your computer.
Insert the Sony PS2 memory card into the memory card reader, then plug the USB cable of the memory card reader into an available USB port on your computer. A folder for the memory card will automatically appear on your computer desktop.
Drag-and-drop the Codebreaker application file into the memory card folder, then remove the card from the card reader. The process for removing the memory will differ by card reader type. Consult the card reader instruction for the proper way to remove the memory card.
Insert the PS2 memory card into the "Memory Card" slot on the side of the gaming system, then press the "Power" button to turn on the system. As the system turns on, the Codebreaker program will automatically install itself and open the Control Panel screen.
Use the "Left/Right" arrow buttons on your controller to scroll to the "Settings" icon on the Control Panel screen, then press the "X' to select it.
Scroll to the "Browser Settings" option, then the "SMS" screen. This will open a listing of browser setting options.
