When working with data inside a Google Docs spreadsheet, you may find that you want to take the data from one cell and split it into multiple columns. For instance, a person's full name might be in cell A5. Using the Split function, you can place the person's first, middle and last names into different cells in different columns.     Visit the Google Docs website at and sign in with your Google credentials.

    Click on the spreadsheet you'd like to open. The spreadsheet will appear in a new tab.

    Find the cell address of the cell for which you want to split the contents. For instance, if the cell is in column A in row 5, the cell's address is A5.

    Click on an empty cell into which you want to split the contents of your original cell. Type the following code into the cell:

    =split(A5," ")

    Replace A5 with the cell for which you want to split the contents.

    Press the Enter key. The contents of your original cell will be split into multiple columns depending on the number of spaces there are in the original cell. You have successfully split a column in a Google Docs spreadsheet.
