How to dye lace fabric
With care, lace can be dyed almost any colour. (Ablestock.com/AbleStock.com/Getty Images)

Lace fabric requires special care during the dying process, since the fabric is fragile and could rip or tear easily. A special open-mesh bag, known as a lingerie bag, will keep the lace fabric intact and undamaged. Cotton or polyester lace can be successfully dyed almost any colour to match clothing or home decor. Once the lace has been dyed, the lingerie bag should be washed thoroughly in hot water and bleach to remove any residual dye.

Instructions

  1. 1

Set the water to hot and fill the washing machine. Place 1/2 tsp of dye in the ceramic bowl and add 237 ml (1 cup) of hot water. Stir with the spoon until the dye has completely dissolved and add the dissolved dye to the water in the washing machine.

  2. 2

Run the lace under the tap until the lace is completely and evenly wet. Place the lace in the lingerie bag and tighten the bag's drawstring.

  3. 3

Place the bag in the washing machine and run the wash cycle for 30 minutes.

  4. 4

Run the rinse cycle, watching the water until it runs clear. Remove the lace and dry it on a flat surface.

  5. 5

Run the washing machine again with the empty lingerie bag, using washing powder and chlorine bleach.

Tips and warnings

  • A 45-minute hot tea bath can be used to turn white lace into beige lace.
