How to Make a Lion's Mane Out of Fleece

Updated February 21, 2017

If you are putting together animal costumes for a theatrical play or for a costume party, you may be surprised by how expensive premade animal costume accessories can be in stores. One solution is to make your own animal costume accessories using materials that can be purchased from any arts and crafts supply store. For example, you can make a mane for a lion costume using fleece fabric that can be trimmed to resemble woolly hair.

Lay out a sheet of orange, yellow or rust-coloured fleece fabric onto a table top. Using pinking shears, cut out three rectangles, each measuring 6 inches wide by 30 inches long.

Lay the rectangles horizontally onto the table top and cut 4-inch lines into each rectangle. Space each cut 1 inch apart. These strips will be the fur of the lion's mane.

Cut a piece of elastic ribbon that measures 18 inches long. Sew the two ends together to create an elastic loop.

Place the three furry rectangles on top of each other into a stack. Arrange the rectangles so that the fur is all facing the same direction.

Wrap and pin the uncut edge of the stack around the elastic loop using straight pins. Sew around the pinned edge of the fleece, then remove the straight pins.

Slip the elastic ribbon around your face, which will cause the fleece fur to stick out around your face.
