Origami roses make an impressive sight. but make an origami rose out of money and you add even more interest. With their intricate design it looks like they would take forever to make. Not so. It just takes a few short steps to complete the origami rose shape. With each flower containing five single dollar bills, an origami paper money rose is a twist to the normal monetary gift for a birthday, graduation or special occasion.
Fold a dollar bill in half width-wise. Repeat with the other four dollar bills.
Unfold the bills. Using a toothpick, roll the corners of the dollar bills to create a curl effect for the petals. Rolling the toothpick about three times will make a correct curl. When folded back up the dollar should make a "V" shape with the curls curling under. The tighter you roll the dollar bill, the better the curl will hold.
Cut five pieces of wire for the stems of the petals. The wire will be folded in half, so measure double the distance of your desired stem length.
Place a wire in the middle of one of your dollar petals along the fold line, with curls facing outward. Crumple the paper around the wire, making a base for the petal. Fold the wire down and twist to create a stem for one petal. Repeat for all dollar bills.
Place one of the twisted dollar bill petals in the middle horizontally. Looking downward at it, the dollar bill will look like a smile, with the curls facing upward. Surround the centre petal with two dollar petals on the right and left edges. The top view should look like this : ((=)). Twist all the wires together to hold the flower.
Place a dollar bill petal on the top and bottom edges of the centre dollar bill petal. Twist the wires together with the other three dollar bill petal wires. The centre petal will be surrounded on all four sides by petals, completing the rose shape.
Use new, crisp dollar bills for the best results. New dollar bills hold the origami shape better. If you are having trouble getting the start on your curls, wet the corners of the dollar bill and then try to roll the dollar bill with the toothpick. Try using paper money from other countries for a colourful display.
