Things you need
- Fabric for the exterior of your bag (tapestry or upholstery fabric)
- Cotton lining
- Handbag handle (chain or wire)
- Sewing needle
- Sewing machine
- Pattern paper
- Tape measure
Draw out the pattern you intend to use for your design. If you are pressed for time, you can find patterns online or in a fabric store. Once you have your pattern, cut it out and attach each segment to the exterior of your chosen fabric. Leave a seam of 1/2 inch on each section to make up for the stitching and lining. Repeat these steps for the reinforcement and lining fabrics. Each section should be symmetrical.
Pin and tack your reinforcement material to the wrong side of your fabric. This will add weight and strength to your bag.
Tack all of your pattern pieces together with the reinforcement. Be sure that the fabrics remain inside out. Once you have tacked all the pieces together, sew each section of the bag piece by piece. Continue this method with the interior lining but do not attach the lining to the bag just yet. Once all is stitched, turn your bag inside out so the design shows. Fold the seams outside and pin them down to create a neat edge.
Fold the bag inside out. Pin the lining to the bag and attach your chain handle on either side of the lining. Make sure the handle fits underneath the lining and attaches to the structure of the bag. Sew everything in place.
Add details and embellishments such as tassels or chains. Cut off any extra string and fabric.
