How to Draw Jaguars Easily
A jaguar features a distinct coat (Jupiterimages/ Images)

The jaguar is the biggest member of the cat family in South America. This carnivorous mammal features a distinct coat of black spots that separates itself from all other types of cats. Drawing a jaguar does not have to be difficult, no matter how much experience as an artist you might have. Select a picture of one of these large animals to help you through the detailed sections.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Sketch a medium-sized oval to represent the head of the jaguar. At the bottom of this oval, sketch a smaller circle that slightly overlaps the oval to create a rough draft of this animal's nose and mouth features. Use light strokes to create these circles; they are just guidelines to help you draw the head.

  2. 2

Draw a larger circle just beyond the head of the jaguar to create the basis for the back and neck of his animal. This circle should essentially start from somewhere near the top of the head and end where the chin of this animal will be. Overlap this circle with the head to gain a better structure of this type of draft.

  3. 3

Sketch a slightly curved line back from the neck outline to create the basic shape of the rest of the jaguar's body. This large, muscular body almost is like a peanut in its shape, as it dips in the middle. Draw vertical lines on the bottom portion of this body outline to represent the legs of the jaguar. Include slight bends in the middle of these lines to give you an idea later on how to create these legs.

  4. 4

Draw a rounded, triangular shape on the end of the small circle of the jaguar's head. This object will act as the nose, and help you better define the overall snout of this animal. Create a slightly curved line underneath the nose, acting as the upper lip of this animal. Draw a U-shaped line underneath the upper lip to designate the jaw of the of the jaguar. Draw straight, horizontal lines out from the nose to represent the whiskers of this animal.

  5. 5

Sketch two proportionally positioned ovals in the upper region of the head to represent the eyes of this particular animal. Draw a small circle inside each oval, as these will be the pupils of the eyes. Draw two triangular shapes above the eyes of the jaguar to create the basic shapes of the ears. Use rigid lines around the edges and between the ears to reflect the hairy texture of the jaguar's coat.

  6. 6

Clean up the edges of the jaguar's snout and head, using rigid lines to create the hairy appearance. Move your pencil down the chin, neck and chest area of the jaguar with the same short, jagged strokes.

  7. 7

Shape the two front legs with little rigid lines, careful to make a visible mark to reflect the way these two limbs bend. Draw ovals at the bottom of these legs to outline the basic shape of the paws, dividing these into equal sections for the toes and claws.

  8. 8

Create a streamlined underside of the belly, moving to the rear-end of this animal. Define the upper thigh of the hind leg that is closest to the viewer of this drawing, using a curved line that stretches from the middle portion of the body and ends at the knee. Draw the bottom part of the jaguar's hind leg and attached paw in the same way as the front legs. If the other hind leg is visible in the picture you are using as a reference, draw this feature as well.

  9. 9

Draw the long skinny tail of the jaguar, making the end of this feature rounded. Clean up the rear-end of the jaguar with a smooth line.

  10. 10

Add small clumps of oval-like shapes to the entire body of the jaguar to give this animal its unique coat pattern. This will be the most time-consuming activity of this drawing. Use light pencil marks to define this pattern, as you will be using the ink pen to detail.

  11. 11

Trace all intended outline marks and details of the jaguar with an ink pen. Do not trace any of the guidelines that assisted you in creating this image, though. Fill in each of the ovals that you drew to create the coat pattern. Let the ink dry, then erase all remaining visible pencil lines.
