How to Test Your Camera for Skype

Updated April 17, 2017

Skype's features aren't limited to chatting via text and making phone calls to other Skype users. The program also lets you make video calls to other Skype users. You can do this for free if you only want to video-chat with one other Skype user at a time. To make video conference calls, however, you must have a paid Skype subscription. Before you make an important video call, it is wise to test your camera to ensure that it works properly for your Skype video calls.

Open Skype. Sign into your account, if you have not already done so and if Skype does not do so automatically.

Click "Tools" > "Options." This opens a list of options organised into several sections.

Click "Video settings," located in the "General" section of the "Options" window.

Click your desired webcam in the options listed under "Select webcam." Wait a moment; the black rectangle under "Select webcam" should now show your webcam's view.
