A fondant baby is a baby-shaped decoration made of fondant and used on a cake. You can form the baby to match any shape or sized you desire. The advantage of a fondant baby is that the entire cake is edible, although some people will not like the taste of dried fondant. It also prevents the need for purchasing plastic figurines for cakes. Making a baby is simple, but adding details to the baby for realism makes the sculpting job more difficult.

Instructions

  1. 1

Determine if you want the baby to lie down or sit on the cake. Decide how large you want the figure to be. Fondant shapes are best in smaller sizes, so the ideal size for the baby is under 6 inches long.

  2. 2

Roll a 2-inch ball of fondant into a circular shape. Flatten the front slightly to make the face. Indent 2 slits in the face for eyes and dent the cheeks slightly to make the nose stick out. Make a third slit for the mouth. Mold the sides of the head into ear shapes, or press 2 ear shapes made from additional fondant pieces into the sides of the head.

  3. 3

Make a pear shape from flesh-coloured fondant to make a body. Make the body about 4 inches long and 2 inches thick. Stick the head on the narrow side of the body. If you want the baby to sit up, press the large end of the pear shape flat and stick the head to the body with a toothpick. If you want it to lay down, lay the pear on its side and stick the head next to it. Carve a rounded shape on the end to make the baby's bottom. You can also make the body from coloured fondant to make clothing for the baby.

  4. 4

Make arms and legs from fondant about 2 inches long and a 1/2 inch thick. Stick the limbs to the baby in the desired pose. Make the arms and legs with coloured fondant for clothing.

  5. 5

Colour the head of the baby with edible markers to make hair. Draw on eyes and a mouth with the marker. You can also use the marker to make details around the hands or feet.
