Enter the realm of the fairy with your very own movable fairy wings that move with you. While the wings may take a little time and preparation, the finished product is beautiful and unique. Make the wings to correspond with the elements or with the seasons. Pair the wings with a flowing dress in corresponding colours or a pair of cut-off Capri length trousers and a tunic in earth tones for a forest fairy. Add a belt and a pouch of glitter or coloured sugar as fairy dust.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • 16 gauge wire
  • 1 yard of sheer fabric
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • A spool of 2 inch wide ribbon
  • Fake flowers, glitter, coloured marbles or other embellishments

  1. 1

Measure the recipient of the wings from the shoulder blades to the waist to determine the proper size of the wings.

  2. 2

Shape the wire into a long butterfly body shape. Use the measurement in the previous step to determine the proper length. Shape the wire into wing shapes. You can shape the wings into rounded shapes or pointed depending on your preference.

  3. 3

Attach the wings to the body with wire. Attach securely but loosely so that the wings can move. Cover the wings with a sheer fabric. Use the hot glue gun to enclose the wire in the fabric.

  4. 4

Decorate the wings with flowers, butterflies, glitter, marbles or any other sort of embellishments using the hot glue gun. Measure the recipient from the back of the shoulder blade, around the front and back around to the back waist.

  5. 5

Cut two pieces of ribbon based on the previous measurement and cut in half. Knot the ribbon pieces to the body of the wings. Place one on each side at the top of the wing body and one on each side at the bottom of the body.

  6. 6

Put the wings on, tying the ribbon in front to hold them securely on the body. Measure the recipient from the tips of the wings to the elbow. Add three inches to this measurement.

  7. 7

Cut two pieces of ribbon based on the measurement above. Attach the ribbon with hot glue around the wing tip. Tie the ribbon around the elbow. As you move your arms, the wings will move with you.
