Aside from its intended use to prove identity and citizenship of United States citizens travelling abroad, U.S. passports are used as a form of identity in several other scenarios. Many people use passports as a form of photo identification, much like a driver's license; passports prove both age and identity. To prove your passport is not a forgery, many agencies need to validate your passport number before accepting it as proof of identification.
