Two types of racks exist that allow you to transport bulky items on top of your car. The most common type of rack is a luggage rack. As you might guess, this rack is mainly used to transport luggage. A second, less common alternative is a roof rack. This rack attaches to a luggage rack and is used to transport items that aren't bulky but are too long to fit inside the vehicle, such as a pair or skies.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Measuring tape
- 2 two-by-fours
- Inner tube
- Utility knife
Lay a pair of two-by-fours across the luggage rack, adjusting them until they are centred. Use a measuring tape to measure from the bar of the luggage rack out 1 1/2 inches to the two-by-four and use a pen to mark that point.
Cut the two-by-four using a saw. You want the two-by-four to be long enough to span the distance between the two bars on the luggage rack and extend 1 1/2 inches beyond the bar on each side.
Place your pair of skis on top of the two-by-fours, side by side. Use a pen to outline the placement of the skis. Then, remove both two-by-fours from the top of your vehicle.
Use a power drill to drill three holes into each two-by-four. Drill the first hole between where the two skis will sit. Drill the second and third holes 1/2 inch away from the outside of each ski. You'll need to do this for every pair of skis that you want to carry on your roof rack.
Measure the distance between the outside two holes of any group of three holes you drilled. Add 3 inches to that distance. Calculate the total and cut a piece of inner tube to that length. For example, if the distance between the two outside holes is 10 inches, cut a piece of inner tube that is 13 inches long.
Cut an "X" into the inner tube, push a bolt through the X and into the two-by-four. Do the same for the middle hole and both outer holes. When you are finished, you will have a piece of inner tube held down by three bolts, with room for your skis to slide underneath.
Lift each piece of your roof rack to the top of your vehicle and then use rope or bungee cord to tie it to the luggage rack. Slide each ski underneath a piece of tubing and above the two-by-four. The rubber sleeve will hold the ski in place as you drive to your winter vacation spot.
