Whirlpool Fridge Freezer Problems

Written by sommer leigh | 13/05/2017

Whirlpool's line of fridge and freezer combinations includes both side-by-side and top-bottom models. While the controls may vary slightly across these models, the problems Whirlpool claims you may experience with these freezers are similar. Most problems are related to cooling issues, the ice maker and the sounds your freezer makes during operation. Determine the cause so you can resolve the issue on your own, or contact Whirlpool directly if you're unable to find a solution.

Set the temperature control for the freezer to -17.8 degrees Celsius if the freezer doesn't seem cold enough. After 24 hours, check the temperature and turn it down by a degree or two if it still doesn't feel cool enough.

Check for objects near the air vents, and remove them if necessary if the freezer temperature feels warm. Try to avoid opening the freezer door often, as this may affect the internal temperature.

Listen for specific normal sounds, if the freezer is noisy during operation. Most noises are normal. A buzzing sound occurs when the water valve opens and fills the ice maker. Pulsating sounds occur when the fans or compressors adjust. Popping sounds indicate the walls are contracting or expanding while cooling. The sound of water running occurs when water is melting into the drain pan during the defrost cycle. You may also hear a creaking or cracking sound when ice ejects from the ice maker.

Close the freezer door completely if the ice dispenser does not operate properly. Set the ice bin inside the freezer correctly; remove it from the freezer and reinsert it to make sure it is properly installed. Check if there is ice in the bin; give the freezer more time to produce ice. If the ice has frozen in the bin, remove it by taking the bin out of the freezer and melting the ice by running warm water over it. Empty the ice from the bin and place the bin back in the freezer so it can produce more ice.

Check the plumbing and filter connections if the ice cubes from your freezer are small or hollow. Make sure there are no kinks in the plumbing lines, turn the shut-off valve to a fully open position and check to see if the filter is correctly installed. Consult your owner's manual for the proper filter installation instructions.
