How to Make a Book Dust Cover
Cover your textbooks to help them last longer. (book image by Kkatka from

A dust cover, or outer cover for a book, is made of paper and is printed with the title, information about the book and illustrations. It also protects the edges of the book from wear and tear. If you need a book dust cover for one of your reading books, textbooks or notebooks, you can create one by using a paper grocery bag. In a few short steps, you can create your own book dust cover.

  1. 1

Peel apart the brown paper bag to create one large sheet of brown paper. Cut along the side and bottom portion of the paper bag. Open your book evenly so it will not close. Lay the book in the centre of the paper bag. Fold up the top edge and the bottom edge of the paper bag and crease both edges.

  2. 2

Remove the book from the paper bag. Fold down both of the creased edges of the paper. Open the book again and lay it on top of the folded creases in the paper bag. Cut the ends of the paper bag so that they are 4 inches longer than the edge of the book. Fold one of the cut edges of the paper bag over the cover of the book so that it fits closely alongside the edges of the book.

  3. 3

Fold the other cut edge of the paper bag over the cover of the book. To make sure that it stays in place, put tape on the top and bottom edges of the paper bag where it's folded over the book cover. Make sure that the tape does not touch the book.

Tips and warnings

  • If the cover is attached correctly, a pocket will be created so that the book cover can slide in and out of the dust cover.
