How to Replace Wheels on Luggage With Inline Skate Wheels

Updated April 17, 2017

Luggage wheels often wear out before the luggage does. Inline-skate wheels last longer than traditional luggage wheels, so they make a good choice for replacement wheels. Most sporting-goods stores sell the inline-skate wheels in sets of two, which will save you money over buying the more common larger packs of six or eight. Remove your existing wheels and take them with you to make sure you buy inline-skate wheels that fit the design of your luggage.

Open your suitcase and lift the fabric panel that covers the wheel caps.

Pry off the wheel caps using a flathead screwdriver.

Unscrew the hardware holding the wheels in place in the axle. Some wheels use screws while other use different kinds of bolts. Use the appropriate screwdriver, hex key or wrench.

Reach outside the suitcase and pull off the wheels.

Insert the new inline-skate wheels into the axle. Secure the wheels using the removed hardware.

Some luggage manufacturers attach their wheels with rivets or other permanent hardware. Contact your manufacturer for wheel-replacement options.
