How to Connect a PS3 Controller Without a USB

Updated July 20, 2017

The PlayStation 3 is the first version of the Sony PlayStation to make use of exclusively wireless controllers. Although they require a USB connection to charge, PlayStation 3 controllers can connect to a PlayStation 3 without having to be plugged in. Since PlayStation 3 controllers shut off from idleness to help conserve battery power, you must wirelessly reconnect them to the PlayStation after every extended period without usage.

Pick up the PlayStation 3 controller and point it in the direction of the PlayStation 3. You must be approximately within eight feet of the device.

Press and hold the circular PlayStation button in the centre of the controller to power it on and activate it.

Press the "Start" button to complete the connection and automatically assign a controller number to the device.
